Where Uganda's Coffee Comes to Life

Uganda Coffee Map

Three Distinct
Coffee Landscapes

From volcanic highlands to equatorial lowlands, Uganda's diverse geography produces a remarkable range of coffee flavour profiles across distinct growing regions.

Mount Elgon

Eastern Uganda · Arabica Region

Altitude: 1,500 – 2,200 metres above sea level

Coffee Type: Arabica (Washed & Natural)

One of Uganda’s most celebrated Arabica growing regions, Mount Elgon sits on the border of Uganda and Kenya. The high altitude, rich volcanic soils, and reliable rainfall create ideal conditions for slow cherry development and complex flavour formation.

The region is home to thousands of smallholder farmers who cultivate Arabica alongside food crops, preserving traditional shade-grown farming methods that enhance biodiversity.

Rwenzori Mountains

Western Uganda · Arabica Region

Altitude: 1,500 – 2,000 metres above sea level

Coffee Type: Arabica (Washed)

The Rwenzori Mountains, known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” form a dramatic backdrop for some of Uganda’s most refined Arabica coffee. The glacial meltwater, consistent cloud cover, and fertile mountain soils create conditions for coffee with exceptional body and smoothness.

Coffee from this region tends to be well-balanced with a heavier body compared to Mount Elgon, making it highly versatile for both filter and espresso applications.

Central Uganda

Lake Victoria Basin · Robusta Region

Altitude: 900 – 1,200 metres above sea level

Coffee Type: Robusta

The Lake Victoria basin in Central Uganda is the heartland of Ugandan Robusta production. The equatorial climate, abundant rainfall, and deep red soils produce Robusta beans with exceptional body, natural bitterness, and outstanding crema potential.

Uganda is globally renowned for producing some of the finest natural Robusta in the world — prized by European and Asian espresso roasters for its performance in blends.

The Only Country That Does Both

Uganda is one of the few coffee-producing nations in the world where both Arabica and Robusta grow naturally at commercial scale — giving buyers a single, trusted source for both varieties.

The Only Country That Does Both

Unlike most Robusta-producing countries where the species was introduced, Uganda’s Robusta (Coffea canephora) is indigenous to the country. This natural heritage produces wild Robusta genetics with greater flavour complexity than cultivated varieties found elsewhere.

Africa's Largest Coffee Exporter

Uganda exports more coffee than any other African nation, with a robust supply chain, experienced export infrastructure, and an established reputation among international coffee buyers for reliability and quality consistency.
